Four buildings raised from snow and ice. Structures of this kind stand for one winter only and are built again from nothing each year, so nothing here is permanent. Season dates are set annually and are not promised on this site. Two of the four lie near Rovaniemi at separate sites, which the entries explain.

Entry 15Hôtel de Glace

Hôtel de Glace is built from snow and ice each winter near Québec City, on the grounds of an existing resort. The building is redesigned and raised again every year, and it melts once the season ends. Heated buildings belonging to the same operator stand beside it and work through the year. The site lies a short drive from the city.

Rooms and suites are cut from snow, furnished with ice and fitted with beds carried on solid blocks. Public rooms include a chapel, a bar with an ice counter and corridors with carved walls. Sleeping is arranged with insulated bags, and the washrooms sit in the heated buildings. Temperatures inside stay below freezing throughout.

Arctic SnowHotel stands at Sinetta, west of Rovaniemi, on a site that also holds glass igloos. The snow building is raised again each winter and does not survive the spring thaw. The company behind it runs more than one address in the Rovaniemi area, so the site is worth naming in writing. The road out from the town is straightforward.

Snow rooms are unheated by design, and the air inside stays below freezing whatever the weather outside. Heated buildings on the same site hold the restaurant, the saunas and the washrooms. An ice bar and a chapel are cut from snow along with the corridors. Glass igloos on the site are heated and work as ordinary rooms.

Snowman World Igloo Hotel stands in Santa Claus Village, on the northern edge of Rovaniemi. It is a separate site from Arctic SnowHotel, run by the same family company at a different address, and the two should not be confused. The snow and ice rooms here are rebuilt for each winter and taken by the thaw. The village around it is busy in daylight.

The site combines snow rooms with an ice restaurant, an ice bar and slides cut into the snow. Heated buildings nearby hold reception, the washrooms and storage for outdoor clothing. Day visitors walk through parts of the site during opening hours. Overnight guests use the rooms once the daytime traffic has gone.

The village is designed anew each winter around a chosen theme, and the melt takes it down in spring. It is run as part of a Finnish hotel company rather than as a house of its own. The nearest resort centres are some way off.

Halls, a bar, a chapel and sleeping rooms are cut from snow and ice, with carved walls throughout. Reception and restaurant services work from heated buildings on the same site. Day visitors walk through the village during opening hours, when the carved rooms are lit. Overnight guests stay on after the village closes for the evening.
